Earth Orbit & Water

Did-u-know that the earth's orbit is in what scientists call the “Goldilocks” zone (not too hot, not too cold-its just right)? The earth is in perfect orbit around the sun for water to be in liquid form. Water doesn't get so hot that it boils away and it doesn't get to cold so that it freezes solid. If the earth was 5% closer scientists say a runaway greenhouse affect would take place causing earth's surface temperatures to rise to 900 degrees Fahrenheit just like Venus. If the earth was 20% farther from the sun, carbon dioxide clouds would form in its upper atmosphere initiating the same ice and cold that has sterilized Mars. (1) All living organisms need water. The average person drinks 2 pints of water a day. If that person lives for 70 years it will total 4,500 gallons. (2) So you can see, liquid water is one of many necessary conditions for complex life to exist. The next time you take a drink of water, remember to be thankful that your home planet is in the “Goldilocks” zone.
