Shrinking Sun |
|||
Did-u-know that last night while you were sleeping the sun's diameter shrank by about 16 feet? Some measurements of the sun show it is shrinking about 2 feet per hour? The sun has been measured for over a hundred years. Studies show the rate varies, but the average is about 2 feet per hour. After sharing this with a group of junior higher's one day, I realized a cloud of doom and gloom had settled over the class. At this point I realized they thought the sun might burn out that very night. After explaining to them that the sun is about 840,000 miles in diameter and there was no immediate need to be concerned, the cloud dissipated. 2 feet per hour figures out to be .4% per millennium. If you believe the earth is only about 6,000 years old there is no problem because the sun has only shrunk by 2.4% and life could have existed. On the other hand, 250,000 years ago it would have been double its present diameter and too hot for life to have existed on earth. 30 million years ago the sun would have been touching the orbit of the earth. (1) Maybe the theory of the solar system being billions of years old should be reconsidered. (1) Dennis Petersen, Unlocking the Mysteries of Creation , p. 58 Return to the Article Page |
